Inspired by a Hallmark movie with color‑conscious casting, Mirko reflects on what equity means. He shares definitions—from fairness to hearing someone’s voice and providing what they need—and argues that equity can’t be passive; we must acknowledge visible and invisible inequities and take intentional action. Drawing from his book Equity by Design, he notes that students experience discrimination based on race, gender, language and more, and that classrooms must be safe places where they can thrive. He offers practical do’s and don’ts for educators: reflect on equity in your classroom, set SMART goals to eliminate inequities, address bias, confront intent versus impact, build relationships with students and families, set high expectations with flexible means and identify barriers to success.
